Spiderman Buttress

It doesn't have many climbs but it does house a few gems that are guaranteed to see traffic from those willing to make their way to the west side of the park. Spiderman Buttress is prominently marked with a large crack running up its low angle base, leading into a small dihedral that leads into a roof. Follow this line and you will be climbing the ever classic Spiderman. Most of the climbs in the area require natural protection which helps reduce the crowds but don't be surprised if you are waiting in line for Spiderman or Out of Harm's Way.

Location

Spiderman Buttress is located on the west side of Smith Rock. You can either scramble up and over Asterisk Pass or walk the long way past the Phoenix Buttress and around the southern tip back past the Smith Rock Group. Once you are on the west side of Asterisk Pass keep walking north following signs for the Mesa Verde Trail. Before reaching the Mesa Verda Wall you will pass by Spiderman Buttress.

The Sterling Hollow Block is great at biting down on ropes when tying friction knots using a Prusik, Klemheist, or auto block. Its Aramid fiber construction helps resist abrasion and heat. Pony up a few extra bucks to have one hanging from your harness, you’ll end up using it.
